Domain Expertise Is the Differentiator in Financial Services AI

In financial services, the constraint on AI adoption is rarely modelling capability. It is whether the team understands valuation, exposure, controls, and the evidence a reviewer will ask for.

The vocabulary problem

A team that cannot distinguish between a trade date and a settlement date, or between gross and net exposure, will build something that looks correct and reconciles to nothing. Domain fluency shortens every requirements conversation.

Explainability as a design input

Regulated workflows require an answer to 'why did the system decide this?'. Design the explanation surface at the same time as the model, and store the inputs that produced each output alongside the output itself.

Controls, lineage, and audit

Auditability is not a reporting layer added at the end. Capture the version of the model, the data snapshot, and the reviewer action for every decision that has financial consequence.

  • Version models and prompts the way you version code.
  • Log the exact inputs behind each output.
  • Record reviewer overrides as first-class data.

Building the capability

Pair engineers with practitioners from the function being automated, and keep that pairing through production. Domain understanding transfers through shared delivery, not through documentation handovers.
